Masters just go down to A’s 7-9

VOB vs A’s.

After the heat in Stellenbosch the day before, very cool conditions at Batswood field saw A’s take a first inning lead scoring 4 runs.

Hadley throwing for us first got off to a decent start, but apparently had some issues with the Umpire. (like the Umpire gets paid). Never the less, our bat’s were not firing at the beginning as we know it can and A’s put some hits together in just about every inning that kept them ahead of us all the time.

We left bases load on two occasions which could maybe be the difference between a win and a loss. Bradley Weeder hit a massive homerun into the wind which was very impressive.We started hitting better in the last inning and unfortunately came up short.

Adie closed rather impressively having a good closing stint. Maybe with better umpiring we could have won the game, and maybe Glen will one day go to Mosque. What’s the chance. I think we lacked on the having fun side a little and it showed in our game. Lesson is, you win some, you lose some and try having fun either way. Final score 9-7 to A’s.

Softball – Redemption vs Khayelitsha 11-12

Saturday 3 November.
Super League: No game, fixtures affected by national commitments.

Second League: VOB 12, Khayelitsha Super Stars 11;

Why we played these opponents for the second time in only our fifth match is an anomaly, but we were happy to reverse the previous result. A boisterous crowd of spectators raised the atmosphere and made the victory that much more fun.

With our regular pitchers unavailable, it was Deirdre (Bernie), to the rescue after more than a decade out of the game. She started the pitching only to find the backstop an easier target than the strike zone. Then redeemed herself when moved to centre field and eventually became an instant celebrity in the final frame when she hit safely and advanced with confidence to score the winning run; converting her earlier vociferous critics on the sidelines to supporters.

Jamie (Bokkie) took to the rubber after the second batter with some temerity yet never lost heart for her first win in the second league. She was well supported by her field in a crucial first innings, noteworthy for a bullet throw from left fielder Jodi (Magnum) to catcher Shaunal (Haggis) who made a brilliant tag for the out at home.

We hammered in six runs in our first batting turn, Sian (Sheena) going deep. That should have been just the start of a landslide, but after that we stuttered away at the plate until Bokkie’s long drive in the penultimate frame cleared the bases allowing her to be ambitiously stranded for the comedy act of the day.

Batman (Farah) and Nightingale (Gadija) were their usual competent selves while JohnFred (Iman) and Manisha (Lollipop) also did their bit to make for a fine win.

Juniors: VOB 0, Lavender Hill 12;

As the second strongest team in the league, we were expected to run the powerful Lavender Hill team close. Instead we threw in the towel from the start, our best players looking out of their depth.
It was left to the lesser lights to show some fight, Lisa twice drawing walks and stealing second, Zahra not backing off and swinging the bat with intent. Nawaar was the only batter to hit safely.

MLR struggle in Stellenbosch 4-17

It was another tough day at the park for the VOB reserves succumbing to 17-4 to Van Der Stel in the blistering Stellenbosch heat in 4 1/2 innings.

It was a game where VOB never got going. They had many scoring opportunities that they could not capitalise on getting the lead runner on base in every inning, VOB only managed to accumulate 4 runs mainly via the bats of Matthew Darius (3-3,2R), Jordyn Riffel (2-3,R,RBi), Jaryd Riffel (1-1,2RBi).

Defensively VOB once again struggled as 18U pitcher Kian Africa battled adjust to the umpire’s strike zone. A tough outing for him, but one that offers a valuable lesson as he get more exposure at a senior level. He wasn’t helped by the field though as VOB fielders didn’t take the chances that came their way. Africa was replaced in the 3rd inning by Kevin Mullins who wrapped up the inning. In the 4th inning Mullins battled on the mound. The ever reliable Matthew Darius was then called upon to close out the 4th inning.

VOB have a lot of work to do over the next 2 weeks if they want to get back to winning ways when the league resumes in 2 weeks’ time.

MaCaws beat down VDS with the next gen on show. 10-6

Derick Smiling after his long homerun

The Macaws made the longest trip of the season down to Stellenbosch to face Van der Stel.

I was keen to see how this young team would respond to last weeks big loss to Bothasig.

Derick “Boy” Baylis got his chance to start and did not disappoint. Boy went 5 innings throwing only 71 pitches allowing 3 runs. Jesse johnson took over for his second ML pitching stint after his successful debut against Tygers two weeks ago. Not enjoying the big hole in the mound Jesse let that affect him and threw way too many balls in his 3.2 inning relief spell, but managed to keep VDS from coming back with some timely K’s. Jesse will have to learn how to handle the different obstacles if he is to be successful at this level as everything will not always be perfect. With two outs in the 9th Jesse was replaced by Zubair Larney who finished off the final hitter of the day with a K, proclaiming “why do pitchers make pitching so hard” LOL.

Talking about aggression and choices just before the bomb

On the hitting side what was very pleasing was the hard contact that was being made by the majority of the hitters, even if it did not always end in a hit. We also saw 3 homeruns in the game. Lance Gordon snuck one over a shortened right field before the fence was immediately moved further out. Jesse then followed with a long smash over left field for his maiden senior (not just ML) homerun. Not to be outdone, Derick followed his up double by launching one over the lengthened rightfield boundary. Luke squared (November and Budler) also got doubles on the day.

This very young team will learn every single week what they need to do if they are going to be successful in the majors, but they have already shown that they have the ability.

Our scorer Judy Beukes doing her selfless job brilliantly

The hard work continues this week in the hope of becoming consistent at this level.
Thanks, as always, to our behind the scenes scorer Judy Beukes for being the one constant scorer at VOB seniors.
